Is the board game pretty much everyone except your 200 year old grandmother grew up with actually the greatest tool we have for learning how to become rich?I was playing Monopoly with my amazing girlfriend Alicia the other night and it hit me: (no the board game didn't grow an arm and smack me). There are two ways to play Monopoly that are essentially the way people are living their financial lives:
Live from roll to roll (paycheck) playing not to lose.
These people have not developed a strategy for playing the game. Basically they are of the mindset that they take what the game gives them and constantly live in fear of landing on something that will wipe them out.
Develop a strategy for winning and not be hindered by setbacks.
These people play with a purpose. Their strategy might not always pay off but they have the mindset that allows them to keep going through adversity. These people also end up taking a few risks through the course of the game.
Of course some would say the luck of the dice plays a huge roll (haha punny) in the outcome of the game. I agree. However, with determination and a plan those rolls aren't quite so scary.
Of course even great players sometimes lose. What makes them great though is the ability to dust themselves off and keep rolling those dice. Or at least the ability to learn from the loss and write a blog about it. Haha maybe you didn't beat me as bad as you thought Alicia! At least I'll never admit it somewhere public like the internet.
I'll admit, you're not a sore loser, and you played until I took ALL your money, made you mortgage ALL your properties, and in my eyes pretty much was a gangster on Baltic Ave saying "You owe me money!" with a knife to your throat. I had too much pride to lose that way. Congrats! You're a fun Monopoly player! :D
